Itz gonna be ISB

Finally I decided that itz gonna be ISB. A couple of ISB admits advised me to mathematically analyze the situation. So my admit decision has turned out to be my first b-school style problem.

Here is the matrix I came up with. Just plain totals as opposed to weighted scores to keep things simple. ISB beat RSM considering my requirements. So i think I'm on my way to ISB even though RSM is a lovely school!!!

Columns
A - Diversity (1-5)
B - Reputation in US (1-5)
C - Reputation in Europe (1-5)
D - Profs (1-5)
E - Placement (1-5)
F - Family Visa/Acco (1-5)
G - Low Cost factor (1-5)
H - Alumni Network (1-5)
I - Exchange Progs (1-5)
J - Total
------------------------------------
Parm | A B C D E F G H I | J |
------------------------------------
RSM | 5 2 5 4 3 3 3 3 4 | 32 |
ISB | 4 3 2 5 4 4 4 5 4 | 35 |
------------------------------------

Scoring Key
1 - Low/Poor
2 - Average
3 - Good
4 - Very Good
5 - Exceptional

hmm..perhaps late in this post, but it appears your mind was already set on ISB before filling the matrix - because there are some obvious inconsistencies ;)

ISB - diversity is 4? it should be 1 don't you think - I mean most of the class is Indian and most of that is IT...

B and C - both should be 1. No one really knows ISB in Europe or US.

D can't be 5 - most of your professors are exchange. 5 goes only if you have top notch resident professors who contribute to research.

H - can't be 4. ISB is too young to be really influential for an alumni. Could have been 3.

All that added RSM would be above ISB..but..there's the big BUT. The BUT is that ISB has far better reputation in India, and RSM has great reputation nowhere. So finally, ISB was a better choice, even if not for your matrix ;)

Enjoy your studies and good luck!

Yeah, it is a little bit late, but I really like the fact that my scoring is being challenged. When I wrote this post from Canada, I was actually going by my own research and what I heard from alums. But now that I'm here for some time I can really validate some of my scores

1 - On diversity - The biggest fact is most of the class is not from IT. It may have been true with some of the older batches but not any more. You have look at the class of 2008 profile in the ISB website. We have so many CAs, mariners, IAS, IPS, IFS, Army/Navy personnels, doctors, media pros and what not. I hope you read my post on my study group. All said, I would still give it only a 4 due to the lower international representation.

2 - On faculty - My rating is entirely based on what I get out of the program. I'm doing term 1 now and we are being taught by 3 profs from Wharton with 30, 15 and 40 years of teaching exp each. You have to be in their classes to realize what I mean. We also have one amazing prof for financial accounting from Kellogg apart from the young energetic profs from ISB teaching in this term. ISB is too young to have famous researchers but looking at the resident faculty here the days are not too far away before these guys make their mark in a big way. Hope you also read my post about Prof.Stine. To sum it up as I will still go with a 5.

3 - On alums - During the orientation week I got to understand the amount of pride that our alums attach to the ISB brand. Alums just show up here in great numbers and they are driving the recruitment scene a hell lot, bringing in their alma mater, conducting case workshops and mock interviews. All said the base is not very wide enough and I would take your point and go for a 3 :-).

All said Rotterdam would also have been a great place (considering FT recently ranked it No.7 in Europe) but ISB is just appropriate for my future goals.

I donno if you are a future applicant but whateva you are doing wish ya all the very best. And it may also be great if you can come out of anonymity. And do keep the comments(and brickbats) coming :-).
